Nguyen, Minhtri K., and Ira Kurtz. A new formula for predicting alterations in plasma sodium concentration in peritoneal dialysis. Am J Physiol Renal Physiol 288: F1113–F1117, 2005; doi:10.1152/ajprenal.00387.2004.—Alterations in the plasma water sodium concentration ([Na ]pw) result from changes in the total exchangeable sodium (Nae), total exchangeable potassium (Ke), and total body water (TBW). The empirical relationship between the [Na ]pw and Nae, Ke, and TBW was originally demonstrated (Edelman IS, Leibman J, O’Meara MP, and Birkenfeld LW. J Clin Invest 37: 1236–1256, 1958), where [Na ]pw 1.11(Nae Ke)/TBW 25.6 (Eq. 1). Based on Eq. 1, alterations in the [Na ]pw can be predicted by considering changes in the mass balance of Na , K , and H2O. In accounting for the mass balance of Na , K , and H2O in patients on peritoneal dialysis, considerations must also be taken to determine the modulating effect of dialysate clearance of Na and K and fluid changes resulting from this therapeutic modality on the [Na ]pw. In this article, we derive a new formula for predicting alterations in the plasma Na concentration ([Na ]p) in patients on peritoneal dialysis, taking into consideration the empirical relationship between the [Na ]pw and Nae, Ke, and TBW (Eq. 1) as well as changes in mass balance of Na K and H2O.

Sequential peritoneal equilibration test: a new method for assessment and modelling of peritoneal transport.

BACKGROUND In spite of many peritoneal tests proposed, there is still a need for a simple and reliable new approach for deriving detailed information about peritoneal membrane characteristics, especially those related to fluid transport. METHODS The sequential peritoneal equilibration test (sPET) that includes PET (glucose 2.27%, 4 h) followed by miniPET (glucose 3.86%, 1 h) was performed in ...

Fluid and solute transport using different sodium concentrations in peritoneal dialysis solutions.

BACKGROUND Fluid and sodium balance is important for the success of long-term peritoneal dialysis. Convective transport is the major determinant for sodium removal during peritoneal dialysis using conventional dialysis solutions. However, recent studies showed that lower sodium concentration in dialysate could significantly increase sodium removal by increasing the diffusion gradient, thereby i...

Effects of anaesthesia on fluid and solute transport in a C57BL6 mouse model of peritoneal dialysis.

BACKGROUND Genetically modified mice show promise as animal models for studying the physiology and pathophysiology of the peritoneum during peritoneal dialysis (PD). Methods for evaluation of the functional characteristics of the mouse peritoneum have not been studied extensively, and the effects of anaesthesia on fluid and solute transport in mouse models of PD are unknown. METHODS A single ...

Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis: Case report and Current Status

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS), is a rare but devastating complication of long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD) with a high mortality rate. The incidence is between 0.5 and 3.3%, decreasing with time. EPS is defi ned as a clinical syndrome with major signs of gastrointestinal obstruction, infl ammatory parameters, radiological and macroscopic changes. Duration of treatment and cessation ...
